Benefits of Coconut Oil for Skin
Hi Guys! Today I am going to discuss the benefits of coconut oil for skin with you all. I recently shared the benefits of coconut oil for hair as well, so don’t forget to check it out.
Coconut oil is a miraculous ingredient with millions of beauty benefits for the hair as well as the skin. However, it is related to some potential harms as well which makes its usage on the skin quite controversial. Although it has more benefits than harms, you must do a proper usage about what type of coconut oil to use, how to use and when to use.
Also, you should take special care and do some extra research before applying it on to your face. This is because coconut oil is known to be comedogenic, i.e. it can clog up your facial pores and eventually lead to acne, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads etc. (1) However, if you want to use it on your face to avail the maximum benefits out of its natural properties, you should invest in a good “extra-virgin coconut oil”.
Well, I am a huge fan of coconut oil because of how it works for me. I have been reaping coconut oil’s benefits for a really long time now and love it to bits. Not only that, I love its mesmerizing smell! I have tried to compile the benefits/uses which are non-harmful as much as possible. I repeat; before you put it on your face, make sure to do your own research.
Now that we are done with a short disclaimer, let’s quickly dive into the article and discuss some of the major benefits of coconut oil for skin on a general scale.
Uses of Coconut Oil for Skin:
Anti Bacterial, Anti Microbial and Anti Fungal:
Coconut oil contains antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal properties in it which makes it a great remedy for treating mild bacterial or fungal infections at home. It also helps in reducing and mildly treating skin problems like psoriasis, eczema etc. (2)
This heaven-sent oil also contains moisturizing properties in it. It gets quickly absorbed into the skin and provides long-lasting moisturization to it. It thus also helps in making the skin soft and treating excessive skin dryness, flakiness etc.
Stretch Marks Solution:
Stretch marks can be a big nuisance for anyone, be it post pregnancy or after extreme weight gain. Luckily, coconut oil can help in reducing them as it moisturizes the skin, and promotes skin elasticity. Thus, it helps in fading stretch marks through regular usage. If you use it constantly from the starting of your pregnancy, you can also prevent stretch marks from increasing or even occurring. (3)
Reduces the Appearance of Scars:
Coconut oil also helps in reducing the appearance of scars, spots and hyper pigmentation. It boosts skin collagen and helps the skin repair itself. Thus, it also evens out skin tones, lightens scars and spots and makes the skin appear brighter, more even toned and cleaner.
Cellulite can be reduced by massaging coconut oil in to the skin. It breaks the fatty deposits in the cells very effectively, leading to easy and effective cellulite removal. (4) It not only boosts skin collagen and promote elasticity, but also has a firming and tightening effect on the skin tissues. This in turn helps in reducing the appearance of cellulite. (5)
Make-up Remover and Cleanser:
Another amazing benefit of coconut oil for skin is that it also serves as a very effective and useful makeup remover due to its cleansing properties. Gently rubbing and massaging it on to the face not only helps moisturizing it but also removes makeup to a great extent. However, it does not suit every skin type. Make sure to only use “extra-virgin coconut oil” on your face and of course, do a patch test first.
Apart from its antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial and moisturizing properties, coconut oil has some great soothing properties as well. It is very helpful in relieving mild body itch, rashes etc. Hence, you can also use it post-shaving or waxing and make your skin feel relaxed, soothed and calm. It also relieves skin from mosquito or other insect bites.
Natural Wound Healer:
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that coconut oil contains all amazing properties in it which are required for a healthy and problems free skin. It is also a very useful and promising natural wound healer. When applied to minor wounds, cuts, nicks or burns, coconut oil can speed up the healing properties and repair the damage efficiently. (6)
Nourishes Chapped Lips:
Who said coconut oil only moisturizes your skin and not lips? It is a wonderful remedy to treat dry or chapped lips at home without investing in a costly lip balm. Just apply coconut oil on your lips each night before going to bed and notice plump, hydrated and moisturized lips within a week. Putting a few drops of coconut oil in your belly button can also heal flaky lips and impart long-lasting nourishment. (7)
Heals Cracked/Damaged Cuticles and Prevents Them From Peeling Off:
Another wonderful benefit of coconut oil is its power to heal damaged cuticles. It also repairs cracked cuticles and prevents them from peeling off. This is due to its moisturizing properties as well as the medium-chain fatty acids found in it. Rubbing it into the cuticles also helps keeping germs away, and achieving healthier nail beds. Moreover, it also helps in loosening the cuticles, pushing them back or cutting nails.
Skin-friendly Massage Oil:
Coconut oil works as an excellent carrier oil with essential oils that are used to relieve muscle aches, massaging the body etc. It makes massaging easier and more relaxing. Additionally, it is a very affordable body oil as well.
Sun Protection and Sunburn Relief:
Coconut oil also contains SPF and anti-inflammatory properties in it. Thus, you can use it as a safe remedy against environmental pollution and sun damage even on infants.
Under Eye Skin Care and Wrinkle Optimizing:
If coconut oil suits your facial skin, you can actually use it as an effective and economic eye cream. Its moisturizing properties help in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, thus working as a wonderful eye cream as well as wrinkle optimizer. It is also known to reduce crow’s feet, puffy eyes or under eye bags very effectively.
Overall, coconut oil for skin is a great choice because it has a low molecular weight. Thus, it tends to sink deep into the layer of the skin and perform better than beauty/skincare products that claim to provide the same benefits as it. (8) This is also one of the major reasons why coconut oil is included as a key ingredient in a number of beauty products.
